Magic island, Seal rocks, mid north coast of NSW
This is a soft pastel on matte board (illustration board) 100cm x 40cm completed in 2014. The scene is Seal rocks, just south of Forster on the mid north coast of NSW. Soft pastels give me a huge range of scope, not only for the colours but for their ease of application. I paint in oils as well but for shear speed, pastels seem to get closer, for me, to the essence of water- particularly the refracting qualities that water offers. For 25 years now I have striven to get to the core of this illusive subject. I work edge to edge like paints, not traditionally, as is the case with most soft pastels. They retain an enormous amount of luster even with blending, so I use this to maintain vibrancy in the pictures I make.
Closer to true colour of the original. Soft pastel on illustration board. Soft pastels that I used were: Unison, Rembrandts, Schmincke, Sennelier, Blue earth and Contès. Finished in eight hours. Fixed with workable fixative. Edge to edge with some blending. Pastels are the easiest to use. No mixing time, no drying time. Gallery price $3,800
