Wendy Fantasia has been face painting since 1995 when she and a friend thought it would make for a good casual job, how hard could it be they thought? They were just dreadful, yet they thought they were fabulous! Ignorance was bliss. Wendy would like to apologise to all those kids years ago, and also to their families who they pressured into modelling for them.
Those days are long gone and by having a strong network of face and body artists in both Adelaide and Melbourne (current location) it was possible to learn some actual skills and develop into a ‘proper’ artist. Face and body painting is something that is always evolving – styles change, new products come along, events happen. A recent such event was the world champs in Austria in July where Wendy placed a very impressive 30th in the world for her category of body painting brush and sponge and 26th in the world for face painting.
For Wendy Fantasia, game-changers have included her first class with Jinny from Canada, and meeting lots of wonderful Melbourne face painters who also attended the same class. She then moved to Adelaide from early 2008 for four years and met with the South Australian contingent of face and body artists. Many of the artists moved forward in various ways with their face and body painting during that time; it was a wild ride! Wendy then came back to Melbourne early in 2012 and a lucky break and circumstances led to reconnecting with many of the Melbourne artists she’d met years before. They have formed strong bonds leading to various projects and different directions.
Wendy Fantasia also teaches workshops in face painting to children through to adults and body painting for beginners through to experienced artists in other mediums.
It’s an exciting, invigorating, exhausting and amazing industry to be a part of and Wendy looks forward to whatever the future will bring.
