Featured artist Ilia Chidzey appeared on Colour In Your Life Season Two (2). Read a little bit about the artist here and support our site by joining and watching the episode below.
Ilia Chidzey was born in Sydney in 1968 and spent 4 years of her childhood in Papua New Guinea. Ilia returned to Sydney in 1975, then spent her formative years in Canberra where she graduated with a Bachelors in Industrial Design in 1993 from the University of Canberra. During her studies, she was fortunate enough to be selected to participate in a traineeship scheme at Philips in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. After graduating Ilia became involved with a collective called The Zoo Illustrative Group before discovering her feet in mural painting. Meeting Geoff Pryor and being allowed to illustrate for the Canberra Times on occasion was a highlight for Ilia, although her meandering mind wasn’t quite ready for the rigors of deadlines.
After the birth of her son in 1995, Ilia focused her professional energies on developing her skills as a graphic designer, a path that she still vigorously pursues. Ilia has always painted and drawn, however, it is only in recent years that she has put emphasis on this side of her development, and has been exhibiting. Ilia has been based on the Gold Coast for the last 12 years.
Ilia has worked in collaboration with Melissa Bates on what they like to call ‘im’s – an exciting combination of brass, aluminum, and acrylic.
Ilia is an artist who loves the freedom of life drawing and shape and curve. Her dynamic pastel studies of the human form reflect also her love of color and the use of the line. To watch her work is to be mesmerized as she glides over the surface she works on.
