Presenting Garth Lena – a Flashback Series from Colour In Your Life

Garth Lena was originally filmed for Colour in Your Life in 2011. In our flashback series “Field of Dreams”, we are showcasing several artists from those early years whose episodes hadn’t been shown on our Youtube Channel. We hope you enjoy, and look forward to seeing what the artists are up to now!

Graeme Stevenson visited talented sculptor and wood carver Garth Lena in September 2011. This episode shows the stages that Garth uses to create an echidna from raw tree material Camphor Laurel and Porcelain clay.

Garth Lena is a Minjungbal sculptor from Fingal Head in Northern NSW who works with wood, steel, clay and tree bark. In 2006 Lena was awarded the NSW Parliament House Indigenous Art Prize, after having taken up his arts practice in 2000.

My ancestry is both aboriginal and South Sea Islander. My art reflects my origins but is not restricted by it. I am interested in modern interpretations rather than traditional forms. My artwork is a way I see of keeping in touch with my land. I work from old stories and try to bring them into today’s times.
