Painting tropical water – refraction – with Mark Waller. From Mark: “Reality is a relative concept. We each construct a version of it that fits our beliefs, relationships and social structures. It appears to me that the structure that we have constructed for ourselves in Australia, is based on a very narrow view of reality, and is not designed to take us to a place much beyond simply existing. We have designed a life of chasing our tails.
However, seemingly just out of reach; yet tantalisingly close – is another world. In this world there is easy access to lives lived with dignity and grace. The porthole to this magical place is in insignificant events and places, and is unnoticed in our scramble for survival. The paradox is that these simple events and places have a complexity and power beyond imagination; and yet are right in front of us.
This is the area in which I paint. The half world between what we see, what we have individually and collectively constructed mentally about our worlds, and what may actually be more real.
I attempt to be a signpost and an opening, for me and the viewers of my work, to this other world. I am a connoisseur of these moments. I wallow in them. The viewing of them reconnects me to the “real” world. They are my sanity and solidity. They are the answer.”
Mark Waller’s tutorial website explore-acrylic-painting.com is dedicated to sharing both the knowledge he has amassed and the passion for both discovering and creating images. You can view his work and limited edition prints via his website here.
In this, the final of Mark’s 3-part “how to” Beachscapes series, he demonstrates how to create that lovely pattern of refracted light that happens when sunshine filters through crystal clear water.
