Hi Patricia and all, using pastels with water and other wet media sounds like fun. I’ve recently joined the pastel society in the state I live in in Au. So I’m sure help is not far away from them and also from member here… I love looking in frequently to see what pictures and comments members have posted.

Hi thank you for the encouragement. I’m using Faber Castell Pencils and same brand Polychromos for some of the work. I tried to start out with good quality. I think so far it’s just my technique that needs some improvement and I guess that will come with practice. Looking forward to seeing more of your work. Thanks again.

    • Dear all, just agreeing that Faber Castell pencils are great for pastel works – I use them to finish off. I love to push pastel around with water and other wet media so use a good quality heavy paper. I endorse David’s encouraging words about not giving up – pastels are beautiful to work with – immediate and forgiving. best wishes,
      Tricia

Love the pastel frog. I’ve only just started using pastel pencils in the past few months. Progressing in smalls steps, got a long way to go. Very inspirational !!! Fantastic web site also.

    • Hi, thanks for the comments. I started using pastels in 2011 and have never looked back. I did find that pastel pencil can be very frustrating as they don’t always work that well. I use a combination of pastel pencil and pastel sticks to achieve the results I can now get. You need good quality pencils though. Don’t give up on them.

  • Hi, I started out using oils and have been using them for approx. 30 years. A few months ago I wanted a new challenge and have started using pastels.
I’m a complete novice in this medium but so far it’s been exciting and I’m enjoying it. I work almost full time, so don’t get a chance to paint everyday but try to set time aside often as I can…[Read more]
