How to Paint Over a Painting – Part 1 with Christine Read

Christine studied art for the Higher School Certificate and really intended to have a career in some form of visual art. As a teenager she had a small business silk screening fabrics and selling them. However, her parents and teachers encouraged her into medicine, as it was thought that this would be a more secure career, so for almost 40 years she practiced as a doctor, but is now retired and has the opportunity to pursue her artistic career.
Christine did not attend art school but has always drawn and painted—she says she is more or less ‘self taught’, but has attended numerous workshops and enjoys being part of an art class. For 2-3 years she attended Ffocus Arts in Mosman (Sydney) and studied with Robbie Hodges. Since living in Lennox Head Christine has done workshops and classes with Turiya Bruce, Zom Osborne and Melissa Wright, and currently paints with other members of the Lennox Arts Collective.
‘”I love almost all aspects of art including drawing, painting and silk screening. I use a lot of colour and I love the sense of being ‘present’ in the work. I enjoy most subject matter, but most frequently paint landscapes, seascapes and still life.” – Christine
In Part 1 of this demonstration, Christine shows how she “renovates” an old landscape painting into her signature “fantasy still life” painting. Part 2 coming soon!
