Hi all, hoping you may be able to help. I love painting portraits and would like to paint celebrities – but am of course concerned about copyright. Do I need to find the photographer of any photo I like and ask permission? Is copyright forever or only for so many years? What about copying paintings like ‘ the girl with the pearl earring’ are these things possible? Love this show and site and all the fabulous art work, thanks for your help, Linda.

    Hi Linda
I actually saw this on a You tubers channel – Lachri fine art- She explained it as basically any photo or film still is owned by the photographer who took it so yes unless you took it you do have to ask permission but an awful lot of people don’t and get away with it no problem. How ever if you do get into trouble with copyright it can cost you. So hope this helps.
