Tony White is a watercolour artist from Newcastle, Australia, however, is now residing in Hobart. Tony has established a great following with collectors and students alike. His work has been sold as far afield as Germany and the U.K.  His social media following is gaining momentum and with over 10,000 Facebook followers, he is hitting his stride around the world.  Tony White is fast becoming a much sought-after tutor, having held many successful workshops for Art Societies all around the country and the Famous Bathurst School of Arts, as well as Brisbane Painting Classes. Tony is a regular contributor to Australian Artist Magazine. His style is traditional impressionistic landscape with a strong emphasis on light and atmosphere.

“I have drawn for as long as I can remember, but I began painting in my teens. An English lady named Beatrice moved in next door to us and she could see I could draw a bit – and she bought me my first set of paints, and I got stuck in and learned the fundamentals of Pure Watercolour with her.  I had a long break of about 20 years while I played music, but I have been back painting watercolours seriously for about 6 years or so. I’m obsessed by it. I dream about mixing colours and filling up my palette and spaying water on the paper…  Bizarre…. Obsessed.”

“I am inspired by light. Even in the most innocuous of scenes, if the light is dramatic and the mood is misty or sharp or rainy, then I’m in. I believe a painting should move you emotionally and if you have to explain it, then it isn’t doing its job”.

Tony White finds other inspiration in the world around us.  Light.  Shadows.  Finding the interesting in the outwardly boring. Tony is constantly editing scenes in his head when he is out and about, taking in the scenery.  Tony says he’s lucky enough to live in Tasmania and that beautiful, diffused light gets him every day. Other artists that constantly inspire Tony are the usual suspects really.  Joseph Zbukvic,  Alvaro Castagnet, Herman Pekel, Chan Dissanyake, Ross Paterson, Amanda Hyatt…..  Tony’s modern favourite artist is probably Chien Chung Wei from Tawian.  Amazing painter.  Turner, Sargeant and Van Gogh are Tony’s all-timers!

Tony White loves to paint primarily landscapes.  That takes the form of traditional country scenes, urban scenes, cityscapes, seascapes, boats….. even a still life or two.

Tony’s favourite watercolour techniques are Wet into Wet and dry-brush. With watercolour you get to exploit these unique characteristics that other mediums just don’t provide.  Beautiful transparent washes and strong tones make Tony smile.  No wishy-washy nothing-ness.
